You might be a prospective Sweet Adeline if you…

… are a woman who loves to sing,

… if you harmonize with songs on the radio.

… if you’re the one who always starts “Happy Birthday” at a party

… if you have sung in a choir, glee club or chorus in your past or present life,

… if you sing in the shower, or

… if you have a passion for music and are eager to learn more.

Almost 27,000 women around the world of all ages, races and nationalities are members of Sweet Adelines International.  The only requirement for membership is the ability to carry a tune and the willingness to commit to weekly rehearsals and periodic performances.  You don’t need to read music, although it is helpful in learning your harmonies.  In fact, many of our singers learn by use of tapes or CDs and the helpful assistance of a “section leader” from the chorus.  A private audition is required before a membership application is accepted.  This audition is usually done 4 to 6 weeks after your first visit when you feel comfortable with a song of your choice from our current repertoire.  It is truly a painless procedure but we need to make sure that all of our members can carry their own part within the 4-part barbershop arrangement.

4-Part Harmony – What Part Do You Sing?

Lead: Lead is the heart. It carries the melody with confidence. If melody is the only thing you hear and your range is between A below middle C and the C an octave higher, lead is right for you. Lead singers carry the melody most of the time. They sing with authority.

Tenor: Tenor is like the twinkle of the eye. The tenor's bell tones are the crystal tinkling harmony sound above the lead, producing a pure, sweet tone that enhances the melody.

Baritone: Baritone is the soul. Baritones sing harmony, sometimes above the lead, but usually just below, in the range of the leads (A to C). The bari is the 'glue' between the lead and bass parts, that holds the sound together.

Bass: Bass is the backbone. The bass sings low notes at the bottom of the chord, ranging from E flat below middle C. The rich, mellow sound is the foundation and support that rounds out barbershop harmony.

If you’d like to explore the possibility of joining our organization, we invite you to visit a Song of the Coast rehearsal any Monday evening at 6:30 p.m.  If you prefer, you may contact us by phone (386-252-0300) or e-mail and a member of our Membership committee would be happy to speak to you and answer your questions.   For directions, click here .
